Feyenoord on ice ahead of Celtic clash as only FIVE players limber up a week before Champions League showdown

September 12, 2023

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has reportedly had to conduct training with just five senior players available as their preparations for the clash with Celtic next week hit a major hurdle.

The Dutch giants host Brendan Rodgers and his team in their opening Champions League game on Tuesday September 19 but have been dealing with a selection crisis in recent weeks. Striker Ayase Uda is out with an injury and with Santiago Jimenez suspended, Calvin Stengs is the only available forward to Slot. Recently though he’s been away with his country along with a host of Feyenoord stars, and it’s reported he had to train for a bounce game against Excelsior with just five senior players at his disposal.

Soccernews.nl say Quinten Timber, Bart Nieuwkoop, Javairo Dilrosun, Thomas Beelen and Thomas van den Belt were the only senior players to get a runout and Slot will be hoping to get his full complement of players back together as soon as possible before the major Champions League showdown.

To add to the woes, first-team regular Lutsharel Geertruida missed the Netherlands clash with Ireland however it is believed he could recover in time to start against Celtic. He’s expected to miss Feyenoord’s game with Heerenveen at the weekend though and a decision over whether he makes it against the Hoops could go down to the wire.
