Real Madrid player admits he is unhappy with his role

September 8, 2023

Real Madrid’s squad has a lot of gaps and holes all over the pitch. But there is one area where they are incredibly strong, perhaps the best in all of Europe, and it is their midfield. Right now, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are no longer first-choice starters in Carlo Ancelotti’s side despite having four spots available in the middle of the park in the new 4-4-2 formation.

That just speaks volumes about the level of competition in Real Madrid’s midfield right now. It is great for the team.

Of course, that does not mean that everybody is happy with their role in the team right now. On the contrary, Modric has admitted that he is not satisfied at the moment.

Modric signed a contract extension with Real Madrid not too long ago. But since then, things seem to have changed for him at Santiago Bernabeu. For the first time in a long time, the former Ballon d’Or winner is no longer a starter.

Real Madrid player admits he is unhappy with his role right now

As reported by MARCA, Modric said in an interview with Sportske Novosti:

“No one is happy when they don’t play. After my entire career, that feeling seems especially strange to me. But hey, the coach decided it for his own reasons. I will not sink or falter because of that.”

Modric further went on to add:

“They wanted me to stay and I had the same desire. My only condition for staying was that they treated me as a competitive player, and that they did not keep me in the roster based on past merits. They told me that nothing would change in my status, and that’s why I signed.”

Thus, Modric does not sound happy with his current role in the team. It is believed that he turned down lucrative offers in order to remain at Real Madrid. And thus, losing his status as a starter would surely come as a major disappointment for the Croatian.

There is a long season ahead though. And considering Real Madrid’s history with injuries, one would expect Modric to get his fair share of chances sooner or later. His experience and ability to perform in the big games could still prove to be vital for this team as well.

Modric recently made his first start of the season, in the 2-1 win against Getafe last weekend. And he certainly showed Ancelotti that he still has a lot of football left in the tank with his performance.
