Todd Boehly’s telling Thomas Tuchel comments amid claims he’s ‘irritated’ Bayern board
Thomas Tuchel is clashing with Bayern Munich’s recruitment team – exactly a year after he was sacked by Chelsea.
Tuchel was shown the door at Stamford Bridge last September. The German’s dismissal was a surprise, as it came just 13 months after he led the Blues to their second Champions League title. The decision was also made within days of the transfer window closing.
Many fans assumed Tuchel was sacked due to Chelsea’s slow start to the 2021/22 campaign. The Blues lost two of their first five games to Leeds and Southampton, who both went on to be relegated, and they were humbled by Dinamo Zagreb in Europe.
Yet club chair Todd Boehly soon revealed that Tuchel was dismissed for failing to buy into his philosophy. There could be a similar situation unfolding in Bavaria, as Tuchel is reportedly unhappy with Bayern’s recent transfer business.
Boehly made the revelation at a conference last September, within days of Tuchel’s dismissal. He described the German as “obviously extremely talented” but insisted his manager needs to be “aligned with the people in the business”.
Boehly explained: “Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us, a coach who really wanted to collaborate.”
As reported by Bild, Bayern chiefs are irritated by Tuchel’s moaning and his general behaviour off the pitch. It’s claimed he wasn’t happy about Bayern’s failure to sign Declan Rice from West Ham, with the England international joining Arsenal instead.
Bayern did sign one of the best footballers in Europe after persuading Harry Kane to move to the Allianz Arena, but Tuchel has even complained about that. He wants more service for the England captain, urging his current stars to put him in a “finishing position”.
Bayern have made a good start to the season. Despite losing 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup, they’ve won all three of their Bundesliga games. Yet as Boehly reveals, results don’t always determine whether a manager keeps their job.
Boehly, who completed a takeover of Chelsea in May 2022, added: “There are a lot of walls to break down at Chelsea. Before, the first team and academy didn’t really share data and didn’t share information about where the top players were coming from.
“Our goal is to bring a team together; all of that needs to be a well-oiled machine. The reality of our decision was that we weren’t sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it. No one is right or wrong, we just didn’t have a shared vision for the future.
“It wasn’t about Zagreb, it was about the shared vision for what we wanted Chelsea to look like. It wasn’t a decision that was made because of a single win or loss. It was a decision that we thought was the right vision for the club.”
Tuchel’s moaning was evident after Bayern’s recent win against Borussia Monchengladbach. He said: “The squad is a bit thin, a bit small. We have six trained defensive players for a four-man chain, which is perfect.” It’s believed such comments have annoyed club chiefs in Bavaria even more. Only time will tell if Bayern eventually get tired of Tuchel.
