Ally McCoist lists THREE PSV threats to Rangers with Dutch giants ‘different’ but task not impossible
Ally McCoist has named the THREE main PSV threats to Rangers ahead of their Champions League rematch.
The Light Blues will go head to head with the Dutch giants for a place at Europe’s top table and the millions that come with competing alongside the very best after reaching the play-off round by knocking out Swiss outfit Servette. Michael Beale’s men recorded a 1-1 draw in the second leg to take the tie 3-2 on aggregate after a 2-1 win at Ibrox the week before.
PSV sailed through with a thumping 7-2 win over Sturm Graz over the two ties – picking up 4-1 and 3-1 victories in the two games. Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his troops knocked out the Eredivisie side last season at the final hurdle and the current crop will be hoping to emulate that success and make it back to back appearances in the Champions League as they look to join Old Firm rivals Celtic in the competition proper. Rangers hero McCoist knows the tough task that faces the Ibrox club over the two-legs and while they defeated them last season, he has warned it is a DIFFERENT PSV this time.
Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of the Super Cup clash between Manchester City and Sevilla, he explained: “It’s a really difficult task. I’ll tell you why; I watched the game last night and I thought Rangers deserved to go through. Should have and probably could have won the game, it wasn’t a great first half but a better team performance in the second half.
“They knocked PSV out this time last year but I just think it’s a different PSV this time. They look stronger, they look quicker and more of a goal threat. It’s a big ask, but it’s certainly not beyond Rangers that’s for sure.”
Rangers will host PSV at Ibrox this coming Tuesday before facing the second leg on the road eight days later. The winner will advance to the group stage and be part of the big draw on Thursday, August 31.
