Premier League to do battle with Leeds for ‘phenomenal’ Brazil-born sensation

July 10, 2023

The Mail claim Leeds United are set to compete with Premier League side Fulham for Coventry City star Gustavo Hamer this summer, after the Brazil-born playmaker starred for the Sky Blues last season in the Championship.

Hamer, 26, starred for Coventry last season. The best of his three seasons with Mark Robins’ side, he produced an impressive 21 goals and assists, scoring 11 and creating 10. He scored goals in the play-off semi final, and final.

But the playmaker has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Coventry. Last week, Phil Hay reported on The Athletic’s website that Hamer is on our shortlist. A player that Coventry boss Robins described as “phenomenal”.

Now, The Mail report that Hamer is a target for Premier League side Fulham this summer. It comes after the Daily Mail (July 1, page 105) said that Brenden Aaronson was a target for Fulham – but decided not to sign our USA man.

Instead, Aaronson has moved to Bundesliga side Union Berlin on loan, after qualifying for the Champions League. Fulham are still in the market for a 10, switching their attention to Hamer ahead of a possible summer transfer.

Hamer would be an incredible signing for Leeds. He would be a very good signing for Fulham, too. Hamer has a decision then. Does he join a Fulham side where he is likely to provide cover for Andreas Pereira in the 10 role?

He would be in the Premier League, living in London, but struggling to start week in, week out. At Leeds, Hamer would instantly be one of our best players and with Aaronson going, Leeds need to bring in a new playmaker.

That is the selling point Leeds must make to Hamer if talks to get to that stage. He has the chance to become an icon at Leeds by helping us regain promotion – and at that point, making himself first choice for the top tier.
