Kwadwo Opoku: Rangers and Celtic ‘signal interest’ in £4.1m winger

Rangers are one of a number of clubs being linked with a move for LAFC winger Kwadwo Opoku, according to a report coming out of Germany.

Fussball Transfers are claiming that Rangers have “signalled interest” in Kwadwo Opoku alongside Old Firm rivals Celtic as Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart reportedly line up a move.

The interest in the 21-year-old Ghana winger doesn’t end there either, with OGC Nice and Girondins Bordeaux mentioned in France as well as unnamed interest from the Eredivisie and Premier League.

Rangers fans will note that Kwadwo Opoku actually plays in the same team as LAFC midfielder Jose Cifuentes, who is a high profile Ibrox target heading into the summer window.

The Gers are believed to be in the market for a new wide player with the club losing Ryan Kent at the end of his contract this summer.

Whilst the most high-profile links have been Luis Palma of Aris and Morgan Whittaker of Swansea City, it is very interesting Rangers are now being tipped for a double raid on the MLS.

But if Rangers are genuinely in the market for Kwadwo Opoku – who’s netted four times in 22 games for LAFC this season – then on top of facing competition from across Europe the Ibrox side will have to pay.

According to the report, Rangers will have to pay up to £4.1m (€4.8m) if they want to strike any deal for the young winger, who is yet to be capped by the Ghana top team.

Is winger a viable option?
It’s certainly an interesting link with Fussball Transfers claiming VfB Stuttgart are eyeing the winger as a potential replacement for Tanguy Coulibaly who is set to leave the German club on a free.

A right winger who can cut in on his left foot – an option Rangers were missing the entire time they had Ryan Kent on the other side – perhaps the attacker can finally fill the right-wing void at the club.

But if Michael Beale is taking Rangers in a new direction after the summer, perhaps splashing such a substantial amount on the budget for an incomplete footballer like Kwadwo Opoku is a tad short-sighted.

The winger started his career with the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy in Ghana before being snapped up by LAFC and breaking through in 2022, where he scored eight goals in 39 appearances.
