David de Gea considered leaving United and moving back to Spain following Sevilla defeat

David de Gea reportedly considered leaving Manchester United after the club were knocked out of the Europa League last month.

The Red Devils saw their dreams of European success quickly fade when they took on Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on April 20.

It was perhaps one of United’s worst performances of the season, in which they lacked passion, desire and threat from the get-go.

At least two of the Spanish sides’ three goals were down to De Gea, maybe even all three; catastrophic distribution, failing to claim crosses or dominate his penalty area marked one of the goalkeeper’s worst outings, and it’s unfortunately becoming a common occurrence.

Last night, a woeful error by De Gea gifted West Ham United the first and only goal of the Premier League clash, making the Reds’ quest for a top-four finish significantly harder.

Still, the ‘keeper has Erik ten Hag’s backing regardless, despite fans’ concerns that he is not the most trustworthy option to have between the sticks moving forward. Last night, the manager reiterated that he wants De Gea to stay at the club and sign a new contract, though it will include reduced terms from his £375,000 a week wages.

De Gea sought United exit

Surprisingly, a recent report from ESPN suggests that the 32-year-old debated leaving Old Trafford in a bid to return to Spain following the aforementioned Sevilla loss, however, he quickly accepted that “he had no realistic option” due to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid “all having settled goalkeepers”, with no other club in La Liga able to match his jaw-dropping salary.
