Real Madrid legend leaves new club after just six months

February 18, 2023

Real Madrid’s squad has been in the middle of change for some time now. In recent years, we have seen several important players slowly depart the club, after having key roles in the team for a long time. This quickly growing list includes names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, Raphael Varane and several others. Marcelo was added to it last summer.

Marcelo had spent more than a decade-and-a-half at Real Madrid, before making his exit last summer. It felt like it was time to go though.

Marcelo’s presence in the team had decreased over the years. Back in his prime, he was an elite left-back and one of the best full-backs ever in terms of skill and going forward. But it was quite clear that he was no longer anywhere near his best anymore.

Marcelo would go on to join Olympiacos in the summer. But things were not working out for the Brazilian left-back there. And now, his time at the Greek club is up.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Marcelo leaves Olympiacos with immediate effect as his contract has been terminated.

Marcelo does not seem to be looking to hang up his boots just yet though. He is now available as a free agent and will look for new options moving forward.

At 34 years of age, Marcelo should have some football left in the tank yet. But he has been struggling with fitness issues in recent times. Thus, it will be interesting to see if a top club end up taking a risk and bringing in the Brazilian left-back, after how his spell at Olympiacos turned out.

Marcelo might no longer be capable of being a starting left-back for a side. But he has plenty of experience to bring to the table.
