Thiago Alcantara reveals the reason for his Barcelona departure in 2013

January 22, 2023

Thiago Alcantara has been one of the most decorated footballers in Spain over the past decade or so. During his time at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, he has won many accolades including the UEFA Champions League.

Thiago’s most successful stint was at Bayern, but it could well have been his childhood club Barça, if he hadn’t left Catalonia in the summer of 2013.

Thiago opened up on his departure from Barcelona, explaining his decision to join Bayern Munich.

“I played with many legends at Barça. So it was hard for me to play as many minutes as I wanted,” Thiago said.

In addition to game-time, the Spaniard stressed the role of Pep Guardiola’s departure, which influenced him to join Bayern Munich. “Then Pep Guardiola left the club and signed for Bayern. He asked me what was wrong with me. My answer was: ‘I need minutes, I have to play’,” he added.

Thiago joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013, in a deal worth around €25 million. It proved to be a bargain for the Bavarians, as the midfielder ended up becoming one of the best midfielders in Europe and featured in over 230 competitive matches for the club.

Thiago’s role was crucial in helping Bayern Munich dominate the Bundesliga. He was also a part of the team that won the treble in 2020.

The Spaniard currently plies his trade for Liverpool. He has already featured in almost 100 competitive matches since joining the Reds in 2020 and is believed to be a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s setup at Anfield.
