Three midfield stars who are reportedly on Liverpool’s January wishlist

January 11, 2023

Eventually having to settle for an FA Cup replay on Saturday night after playing out a thrilling 2-2 draw at home against Wolves, Liverpool once again find themselves seeking some much-needed stability.

Opening up the New Year with a nightmare display in west London as they were hit with a shock 3-1 drumming at the hands of Brentford, it appears that Jurgen Klopp’s side could face a real uphill struggle in 2023.

With many believing that the former European champions could miss out on an essential top-four finish this season, it has been Liverpool’s midfield struggles that has seen them come under growing scrutiny.

While Klopp’s side might still be heavily linked with what would be a blockbuster move from England international Jude Bellingham, it is expected that Borussia Dortmund’s talisman will not be on the move until the summer.

However, facing what looks set to be a crucial month at Anfield, we have taken a glance at a few midfield stars who Liverpool could be looking to recruit before the January transfer window slams shut.

Moises Caicedo – Brighton

While Moises Caicedo might have only arrived in the Premier League back in February 2021, it is fair to say that the 21-year-old has made an immediate impact at the Amex.

Making the move to Brighton for a fee of just £4.5million, the Ecuadorian ace has a host of top-flight admirers and has only continued to receive a string of praise during his brief stint in England’s top-flight.

However, while Brighton might have their midfield talisman tied down on a deal that runs until the summer of 2025, it appears that Caicedo could be on the move sooner rather than later.

Although the 28-cap international might have also been linked with a potential move to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United over the past 12 months, it looks like Caicedo has plenty of fans around Anfield.

Quickly becoming one of the Premier League’s most sort after young starlets, this is no the first time that the Brighton ace has been linked with a Merseyside switch.

With The Daily Mirror reporting last week that the Seagulls have slashed their price tag for Caicedo by £20million, Klopp’s side could be tempted into a January swoop.

Sofyan Amrabat – Fironetina

With Morocco making real history out in Qatar last month as they became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, it was Sofyan Amrabat who received a host of plaudits for a string of dominant midfield displays.

While the Fiorentina star might have previously been linked to the likes of Tottenham, Amrabat finds his stock at an all-time high and many have suggested that the 26-year-old could be inching towards a blockbuster move in the near future.

Along with speculation that the likes of Barcelona are keeping tabs on Amrabat, The Daily Star reported on Monday that Klopp himself is a huge fan of the 46-cap international and would jump at the chance to complete a potential deal this month.

Having to settle for a spot in Fiorentina’s 2-1 victory at home against Sassuolo last weekend, it has also been suggested that the Viola would be willing to part ways with their midfield talisman if they receive an acceptable approach before Deadline Day.

Showing in Qatar on Morocco’s famous World Cup adventure that he is among Europe’s elite midfield options, many around Anfield would be excited by Amrabat’s arrival in January.

Yunus Musah – Valencia

While the USA might have missed out on the chance to book a World Cup quarter-final ticket last month, a host of USMNT stars left Qatar with plenty of admirers.

With there continued reports that Klopp is planning on breaking the bank in order to bring Bellingham to Anfield in the summer, the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss could be looking for a cheaper alternative this month.

Impressing out in the Middle East and establishing himself as a key part of Valencia’s plans this season, reports in Spain have suggested that Yunus Musah could be on his way to Merseyside over the coming weeks.

Already making 13 La Liga appearances for Valencia this season, Spanish outlet Fichajes reported earlier in the week that Klopp is keen on bringing the 20-year-old to Anfield on a permenant basis.

Although Musah might have been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United over recent weeks, The Liverpool Echo reported on Tuesday that Liverpool currently find themselves sat in pole position.
