20-year-old Barcelona prodigy could be poised for his breakthrough following Pedri’s injury

August 27, 2023

If the injury to Ronald Araujo was not enough, Barcelona were dealt with another big blow this week, with Pedri picking up a thigh injury.

The young midfielder has been ruled out for several weeks, thus compounding the problems for head coach Xavi Hernandez.

Time for Fermin Lopez to shine?
Pedri’s injury could be a major blow for Barcelona as they look to start the season on a positive note.

But the youngster’s absence, coupled with the club’s failure to sign Giovani Lo Celso could prove to be an ideal opportunity for a certain somebody to make his mark at Barça.

The player in question is Fermin Lopez. According to Diario SPORT, the young midfielder may stand to gain from the current scenario and receive crucial first-team opportunities.

Following the injury of Pedri, Xavi has limited options in the advanced midfield position. Although Ilkay Gundogan and Gavi are more than capable of making up for the numbers, Xavi does need someone like Fermin.

This is because Gavi could be required more in the wider attacking role, thus requiring Xavi to fill one spot in the interior position.

That is where Fermin Lopez comes into the fray. The 20-year-old showed great promise during pre-season, impressing the onlookers with his creativity.

Not to mention, the youngster can also operate in the wider attacking positions, making him a useful asset to have for Xavi.

At the end of the day, though, the decision is up to the Barcelona coach. He does have enough quality to replace Pedri, but perhaps for a long period, he may require the services of Fermin.

Only time will tell whether or not the Spaniard is prepared to make a breakthrough for Barcelona in the coming weeks.
